Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the US and Puerto Rico amounted to 5.886Mt in the first month of 2024, down 14.3 per cent YoY from the 6.872Mt recorded in January 2023, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Botswana to restrict cement imports

Botswana’s government plans to introduce new restrictions for the import of cement in 50kg bags and only allow 1000kg bags from 1 October 2024, according to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mmusi Kgafela. This then provides an opportunity to look for partners and participate in this wealth creating initiative,' he said. The ban on 50kg bags would enable wealth creation by re-packaging cement in different bag sizes.

Cement consumption in Ukraine increased 17% in 2023

Polish cement producers voice concern over Ukraine imports

The Association of Polish Cement Producers has raised concerns over the 350 per cent surge in cement imports from Ukraine. "The scale of imports from Ukraine is growing almost every month, reaching nearly 50 per cent of total imports in January 2024. Kazakhstan-based Steppe Cement reported revenue of KZT3.779bn (US$8.4m) in the first quarter of 2024, down 23.5 per cent from KZT4.938bn in the year-ago period. The company's market share in Kazakhstan contracted to 11.5 per cent in the 1Q24 from 12.7 per cent in the 1Q23. Peruvian cement dispatches slipped by two per cent YoY to 0.89Mt in February 2024 when compared with the previous year’s equivalent period, said the country’s cement association, ASOCEM. Cement consumption in Argentina fell 23.5 per cent YoY to 684,960t in February 2024 from 895,938t in February 2023, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP.
