Cemtech Florida - 3-6 December 2006 | Grand Floridian Resort complex
Download Programme
Cemtech’s first American conference, held in early December 2006 at Disney’s
prestigious Grand Floridian Resort, Orlando, Florida, got off to a great start
when over 150 cement professionals gathered to take part in the three-day
meeting organised by International Cement Review.
Presentations included an appraisal of current worldwide cement markets with
some pertinent insights into the major cement players and their strategies. A
tightly focussed report on US cement industry trends was complimented with a
report on the melting pot of Florida’s cement and building materials industries
with its recent massive increases in cement consumption, new capacity being
built, cement imports flooding in and takeovers and acquisitions.
A detailed review of the recent US-Mexico settlement in respect of the
long-running Mexican cement dumping claims and counter-claims also formed part
of the programme, as did a timely insight of how analysts expect Cemex’s US$13bn
bid for Rinker Materials to pan out.
Speeches continued with a look at Cuba and the Caribbean, US white cement
markets, the Lafarge Tula plant in Mexico, emission controls and environmental
performance, large capacity terminals, refractory systems, fuel and power
requirements, improving plant performance, US slag markets, maintenance issues,
and much more – a wealth of information for all participants over the two days.
An exhibition area housing 20 of some of the cement industries leading suppliers
provided an additional platform for delegates to create new alliances. The
levels of hospitality offered to all delegates, including dinners, trips to the
Adventurers Club and the big finale in the American Pavilion followed by an
unbelievable fireworks display on the lake at Epcot are to a large degree down
to the exhibitors involvement at Cemtech events.
The final day of the event included a visit to Suwannee Cement, located in
Branford, 120 miles north of Orlando where an informative presentation and tour
of the state-of-the-art facility provided a fitting end to proceedings.
