Hello Kam,

It is possible to add a fine pozzolan such as fly ash to the preheater as long as the particle size is close to that of the raw meal, and sufficient mixing with the hot meal occurs before the mix enters the burning zone. Also the consistency of the fly ash feed rate needs to be controlled closely so that the chemistry and burnability of the clinker is not adversely affected.

However, I would not recommend adding coarse materials such as sand to the smoke-box because these will not have enough time to react with the CaO in the kiln feed, resulting in free lime.
