Cemex’s cement factory in Rugby has been fined GBP200,000 after the death of an employee in an on-site explosion.

Peter Reynolds, a 28-year-old dad, died at the Lawford Road plant in January 2008 when a powerful explosion forced him through the wall of the building and he fell 30ft to his death.

The company was later charged under the Health and Safety at Work Act for failing to ensure the safety of employees, including Mr Reynolds. Cemex admitted the charge at a previous hearing on August 17.

Monday’s sentencing at the Warwickshire Justice Centre in Leamington was attended by Cemex directors and Mr Reynolds’ widow and mother.
