Colombia’s August cement demand expands by 22%

Colombia’s domestic cement shipments rose YoY by 22.2% to 917,000t in August, according to the national statistics office DANE. The highest gains were recorded in the provinces of Casanare (+64.8%), Norte de Santander (+49.9%) and Cesar (+47%).

Domestic cement producers increased their output during the month to 9.6Mt when compared with previous year.

In terms of the current year to August, cement sales increased by 13.7% with key growth areas Cesar, Huila and Córdoba noting advances of 42%, 34.8% and 29.4%, respectively. In addition, market expansion was also noted in Casanare (+28.2%) and Boyacá (21.6%).

Deputy Minister for Housing, Julio Miguel Silva, attributed the increase in demand in Huila to the social housing project Bosques de San Luis which currently sees the construction of 4000 housing units. In addition, the maintenance and repair segment is also driving increased cement demand.
