US May shipments up 2.5% YoY

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for May 2011 were 6.5Mt. This was 2.5% higher than shipments in May 2010. Shipments for the year through May were 24.8Mt, about 1% lower than those of the same period in 2010.

The leading producing States in May were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida, and Pennsylvania, in descending order, and accounted for about 42% of the total production. The leading consuming States (Texas, California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, in descending order) received about 35% of the May total shipments.

Clinker production totaled 5.8 Mt in May, about 1% higher than the output in May 2010. Production for the year through May was 22.7Mt, slightly lower than that for the same period in 2010. The leading clinker-producing States in May were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida, and Alabama, in descending order.

May 2011 imports of cement and clinker of about 604,000 t were down by nearly 10% from those in May 2010. Imports for the year totaled 2.1Mt, down by nearly 7% from those for the year through May 2010.
