Messebo & National Cement team up for coal purchases
02 August 2011

Following the government directive for cement factories to first use petcoke, and later coal, as alternative sources of energy, Messebo Cement Factory and National Cement SC have jointly imported coal worth a total of around US$7.6m from South Africa.

Being the only two factories that use coal for electricity generation, the two companies agreed to transport the coal jointly using a single shipment. Out of the total consignment, 5000t belongs to National Cement.

“Since the transport cost decreases as the amount of the material we purchase increases, we decided that it was in our interest to collaborate with Messebo,” Kebede Engida, head of the logistics department at the National Cement, told Fortune.
