Cementos Argos reports strong first-quarter sales
28 April 2011

Colombian-based producer Cementos Argos has posted strong first quarter 2011 results, registering record sales volumes for the period.

Grey cement sales in Colombia for the first quarter of 2011 totaled 1.2Mt, 27% higher than over the same period last year. Similarly, the company also sold 587,000m3 of concrete, with an increase of 48% over the first three months of 2010.

In the Caribbean it also made significant improvements in the first quarter.

While the market for cement export from there to the United States continues to suffer from lower demand and low prices, the company has succeeded in dispatching cement to other destinations and also cover a significant portion of the market in Colombia’s northern coast. In contrast, in the United States the results reflect a still weak construction sector and the first few months was  affected by adverse winter weather conditions.

"We had a very satisfactory start to the year, most of our operational figures reflect positive changes from the first quarter of 2010, not only as a result of improved trends in our markets of Colombia and the Caribbean, but also as a result of the effort we have been making within our company in search of a more efficient, standardised operation, "said José Alberto Vélez, president of Argos.
