Cong Thanh Joint Stock Company has begun construction of a 600MW coal-fired power plant in the central province of Thanh Hoa in the presence of Vietnamese deputy prime minister Hoang Trung Hai.

The two-turbine plant will be developed in two phases with VND8trn (US$383.5m) earmarked for the first stage and VND5trn (US$239.7m) for the second phase.

The facility will be located on a 63ha area at the Nghi Son Economic Zone in Tinh Gia district. GE Energy will provide consultancy and design services as well as equipment to the plant.

Cong Thanh Co plans to use dust coal tapped from Hon Gai and Cam Pha mines in the northern coal hub province of Quang Ninh to feed the plant once its turbine 1 enters operation in the first quarter of 2014 and turbine 2 in the third quarter of 2014.

The plant is expected to generate 3.9TWh of electricity a year to supply to the Nghi Son EZ in particular and to the north-central region in general.
