Ethiopia’s largest cement company, Mugher Cement Enterprise is in the final phases of an expansion project which will be built around Tatek Military Camp, 12km west of Addis Ababa. The project is expected to be commissioned this month.

The new expansion, erected by China’s Sinoma, commenced in January 2008. However it was expected to start its commissioning at the end of 2010 but has not started operations until now. The expansion of the state-owned company is set to increase existing cement capacity of 900,000t to 2.4Mta – 150 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, Messobo Cement – part of the The Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT) –  is expected to fully undertake an additional 3000tpd of clinker in the coming weeks. The new facilities have been commissioned and will begin operating this month. The expansion by Hefel Cement Research and Design Institute, a China based firm, will enable the company to produce 6000tpd of cement, up from 2000tpd.
