Ethiopia plant project update
20 December 2010

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry said that some 35 projects with over EBB54bn (US$3.8bn) combined capital have been engaged in cement production.

Ministry Corporate Communication Directorate Acting Director, Melaku Taye, told WIC today that nine of the projects have already begun producing 1.2Mt of cement.

He said some seven additional cement projects are expected to begin   production this budget year, thereby raising nation’s annual cement production to 5Mt.

The remaining projects are at various implementation stages and they would have a significant contribution towards alleviating cement shortage when they are completed, he said.

He further said that the projects would have a great contribution for the successful realisation of the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).

Upon going fully operational, all the 35 projects would raise nation’s annual cement production to 27Mt, according to Melaku.
