Bangladesh clinker imports surge
22 October 2010

Private cement producers and traders in Bangladesh imported clinker to the value of BDT2400m (US$34.29m) in July 2010, reflecting a 147.42% YoY growth when compared with the BDT970m value of imports in July 2009.

Total imports of clinker in FY2009-10 (July-June) reached BDT23.05bn, up 6.8% against BDT21.58bn registered in FY2008-09, according to the State Bank of Bangladesh.

Moreover, the higher level of imports appears set to continue. At present, 10 vessels at Chittagong Port are ready to offload 314,920t of clinker while 15 vessels are waiting to discharge their clinker cargoes, as shown by the port authority’s data.

One of the country’s leading traders/importers, Dhaka-based M/S Dynamic Corp, told CemNet that imports of clinker into Bangladesh will climb due to the surge in cement demand as infrastructure and housing projects are implemented.

Historically, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have been key importing countries for clinker entering the nation.
