07 October 2010

As at the end of Sep 2009, Lafarge took over the management of the Kerbala cement plant in Iraq from state company Southern Cement and begin restructuring work. The first production line will be repaired initially and a 45MW power station erected. The second line will then be restructured with the help of international companies. Investment costs amount to US$200m. Once the 30-month modernisation phase is complete, total capacity will be 1.8Mta. The plant currently produces a fraction of this. The contract signed with the Iraqi industry ministry in Apr 2010 runs for 15 years. Published under Cement News
