Farmers today held a rally in the district to protest the proposed construction of cement plant by Nirma group allegedly on farming land. The rally, held in Doliya village of Mahuva taluka, was led by rebel BJP MLA Kanu Kalsariya in which state Congress leaders Arjun Modhvadia and Kuverji Bavaliya were also present.

"I will ensure that under no circumstances the cement plant is constructed in the district," Kalsariya said addressing the farmers. The state government was working with the Nirma group. To throw out the group from here, it was necessary to remove the government first, he said.

Earlier, Kalsariya had said the construction of the plant will directly impact over 5,000 farmers of the district. According to Kalsariya, the project will take away 268 hectares of farming land and thousands of farmers will be rendered jobless since the group has assured to give employment to few people only. He alleged that the plant would be a ecological disaster as it will increase the salinity ingress of the area by many fold and would also create pollution.
