Minister orders for fresh cement tests, Nepal

Minister orders for fresh cement tests, Nepal
06 September 2010

Minister for Commerce and Supply Rajendra Mahato and Department of Commerce, which falls under his jurisdiction, are apparently at loggerheads on DoC asking six cement companies to stop production after samples of their products were found to be substandard in a laboratory test conducted by the
department.

The minister has asked DoC to nullify previous quality test by the Department of Standard and Measurement and ordered for a new test of fresh samples. We have got new test orders from Ministry of Commerce and Supply (MoCS), said an officer at the department today.

The minister is said to have violated the provisions of Consumer Protection Act 1998 by interfering with DoC action against the six cement industries. Minister’s order seems to have come following Cement Manufacturers’ Association’ (CMA) lobbying to withdraw order of the department.
