High Court issues notices to govt, Nirma
29 July 2010

The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre, the state government and Nirma group in connection with a review petition filed against the allotment of land for a cement plant in Mahuva.

Further hearing on the petition has been kept for August 26.

Farmers from Mahuva taluka had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) under the banner of Shree Mahuva Bandhara Khetiwadi Pariyavan Bachav Samittee.

The petitioners had demanded court directions to the government to cancel the land allotment claiming it would jeopardise the local ecology and their livelihoods. They had contended that of the 268ha allotted, 222ha were part of a waterbody, which came into existence after prolonged efforts to build check dams in the region to check salinity ingress.

Earlier in April, the HC had turned down the petition while allowing Nirma to go ahead with the plant after surrendering 46ha allotted to it in four weeks.
