If the Lafarge reconstruction project continues according to schedule, work on the cement plant bordering Greene County would start in 2014 and end in 2018, company officials said.

LaFarge Environmental Manager John Reagan presented an update to the New Baltimore Town Board about modernization plans for the Ravena facility at their recent meeting.

The largest supplier of cement in North America, LaFarge is one of three cement plants in New York State with branches in Brooklyn, Buffalo, Oswego and Buchanon.

The Ravena plant, located on 3,200 acres with quarries on the western escarpment was originally built by Atlantic Cement Company in the 1960s because of its proximity to limestone quarries and the Hudson River.

It ships 80-85 percent of its products by barge along the Atlantic seaboard.
