Pakistan cement sales cross 3Mt mark
31 July 2009

Cement sales have passed the 3Mt mark this month, registering 15 per cent growth over dispatches of 2.6Mt produced in July 2008, industry sources said on Thursday.

The official figures by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (Apcma) are expected to be released shortly. Inayat Ullah Niazi, Director and Chief Financial Officer at D.G. Khan Cement, in reply to queries told Dawn.com on Thursday that demand had remained firm during the current month.

He expected sales for all of the year to grow by five per cent. Total dispatches had increased by a meagre two per cent in 2008-09.

The allocation of a substantially huge amount of PKR621bn for the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2009-10 is now shrouded in uncertainty, owing to fiscal constraints and IMF shackled economy.

But Mr Niazi expected local demand to remain strong as the country would embark upon the reconstruction activities in Swat and Malakand.
