Cement plan proposal back for Manatee County review

Cement plan proposal back for Manatee County review
24 March 2009

The Manatee County Commission will be asked Tuesday whether it intends to delay or resolve a dispute about the location of a proposed Lena Road cement plant that has dragged on for more than four years.

Hamilton “Chip” Rice Jr., a former county attorney, served as a special magistrate in the case. Rice recommends that the county find an alternative site for the plant that Cemex Corp., formally RMC South Florida Inc., wanted to locate in an industrial park off Lena Road.

Yet county attorneys say that efforts to find a suitable site at Port Manatee or elsewhere have failed.

The commission has the option of scheduling a public hearing to reconsider Cemex’s land use application.
