Holcim Mothballing Mason City plant

Holcim Mothballing Mason City plant
04 March 2009

Holcim will be moth-balling the plant in Mason City at the end of the year. This means they will stop operations, but won’t physically close the plant.

The company plans to keep their permits valid so they can restart operations at a moment’s notice if the economy turns around. The company is confirming there is no current timeline for the plant to re-open.

There will be three waves of lay-offs. They’ll start in June with 40 workers in both hourly and managerial positions.

The next lay-offs will come in the next two quarters.

Workers said the lay-offs were expected - but not for at least another year. Mason City is the only plant still operating in the "River Region" along the Mississippi.
