Holcim: no comment on interest for HeidelbergCement
09 January 2009

Holcim  Friday declined to comment whether it is interested in buying a stake in Germany’s HeidelbergCement AG, according to reports by Dow Jones Newswires, but added it continues to look for suitable takeover targets.

"We don’t want to comment on Heidelberg at the moment," Holcim spokesman Peter Gysel said.

"Of course, we’re looking at options which would add value, as we’ve always said," he added.

Financing takeovers currently isn’t easy, the spokesman said. "But we have a strong balance sheet," he noted.

HeidelbergCement is partly-owned by VEM Vermoegensverwaltung GmbH, the holding company of the late German billionaire Adolf Merckle, and there has been speculation over a sale.
