SCG expects cement demand will contract 10% in 2009
07 November 2008

Mr Pramote Techasupatkul, President of SCG Cement Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of SCC Plc, has stated that domestic demand for Portland cement may drop at least 10% in 2009, from the 25.6Mt in 2008, blamed on the sluggish global economy and domestic political problems.

It is expected that SCG’s cement sales in 2008 will reach about 9Mt, up 6% YoY. Their cement exports will total around 8.1-8.2Mt – similar to their 2007 export of 8.1Mt. Currently, the company is producing cement at 80% of capacity. It is very likely that this production rate will be cut further in light of shrinking demand domestically and internationally.
