Pakistan cement sector 1Q growth down by 15% YoY

Pakistan cement growth registered a 15.43% decline in the first quarter of this fiscal (July- September 2008). A total of 4.833Mt was sold compared to 5.715Mt during similar period in 2007.

Overall economic downturn, political instability, law and order situation has delayed the launching of new projects. Domestic cement utilisation growth YoY was down by 20%.

However, an increase of 57.54% was recorded in cement exports in the first quarter of the fiscal year. Pakistan exported 2.5Mt cement to Afghanistan, Indian and other countries  in the first quarter of fiscal year 2008 to 2009 compared to the last year 1.565Mt.

In the July 2008 local cement utilisation registered 1.79Mt compared to the July 2007 1.947Mt, registering a decline of over 8%. Similarly, domestic cement utilisation in August and September 2008 recorded a decline of over 21 and 17% respectively.
