Cemex closes German capacity

Cemex closes German capacity
31 October 2008

Cemex is trying to bring capacity in line with the falling demand by three capacity closures in Germany.  This follows falling cement demand both in Germany and in the company’s export markets.

The 0.4Mta grinding plant at Beckum-Meersmann in North-Rhine Westphalia, where the kiln was shut down in 2006, being closed.

Cemex is also shutting down two older 0.3Mta kilns at its large Rüdersdorf works to the east of Berlin. The Rüdersdorf works has been used to supply Cemex trading operations in Sweden and Norway, which are now likely to be supplied from elsewhere in the group, saving the cost of the rail transhipment to Rostock, from where it went by sea to the Scandinavian coastal terminals.
