Cement factory proposal welcomed in Pokot district, India

A proposal by the multinational Mehta Group of Companies to establish a cement manufacturing plant in Pokot district has been welcomed by the president Mwai Kibaki.

The President said the establishment of factory in the area, would help spur the local economy and create jobs for area residents.

The President made the remarks Monday at his Harambee House Office during talks with MN Mehta the proprietor of Mehta Group of Companies who paid him a courtesy call.

Pokot district has large deposits of limestone, which is the key raw material in the manufacture of cement while the area is also close to the target markets of Sudan and Ethiopia.

If established the cement manufacturing plant estimated to cost a Kshs 14bn and would have a capacity to produce 1Mta of cement.
