Indonesia’s Semen Gresik Jan-May cement sales up 12 per cent
23 June 2008

Indonesia’s biggest cement producer by sales volume, the state-run PT Semen Gresik Tbk, said on Monday its cement sales in the first five months grew 12 per cent from a year ago to 7.28Mt as stronger domestic sales offset falling exports.

The company said it sold 6.8Mt of cement in the local market during the Jan-May period, or 16.5 per cent more than a year ago.

Meanwhile, its cement exports dropped 28 per cent to 460,805t.

Nationwide cement consumption grew 20 per cent to 15.41Mt in the first five months.

Cement consumption is an important economic indicator as it reflects the level of construction activity in the country.

Semen Gresik’s main rival are PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa, a local unit of Germany’s HeidelbergCement AG, and Holcim Indonesia, the unit of Swiss cement maker Holcim.
