Railton’s cement works: asbestos survey

Railton’s cement works: asbestos survey
22 May 2008

The cement works at Railton in Tasmania’s north west is to be the subject of an asbestos survey and research program. From the 1940s to the late 80s, Goliath Cement was Australia’s third largest producer of asbestos-based products. Now owned by Cement Australia, removal of asbestos from the site began two years ago. The study will be conducted by researchers from three Australian universities and include the use of an Occupational Health and Safety historian. Researchers will examine how many workers already have an asbestos-related disease and how many people may yet be affected. The union says the study has the full support of Cement Australia.
