Holcim seeks transit to export clinker to India over Bangladesh
06 March 2008

Holcim has requested the Commerce Ministry to give it the transit facility for transporting clinker from Chittagong port to India through the land ports on the border.

Sources in Commerce Ministry and National Board of Revenue told UNB that  Holcim wants to reach clinker to feed the Indian cement factories that will meet the cement of northeastern states, popularly known as Seven Sisters.

Holcim has three cement plants in Bangladesh.

NBR formed a committee to examine the request of  Holcim. The committee at a meeting is believed to have viewed that transit facility would leave an adverse impact in the country.

The officials said  Holcim interested also to send its clinker to Nepal and Bhutan by using the transit facility.

The committee is likely to finalise its recommendation to the government shortly.
