Cement factory workers threaten nationwide strike
Cement factory workers today threatened to go on a nationwide strike on January 24 if manufacturers did not announce an adhoc payment of Rs 60,000 to employees in view of the huge profits being made by them.
The decision to this effect was taken at the National Convention of Cement Workers Federations and other Unions held here today.
A resolution passed in the meeting claimed that the manufacturers have not shown any "favourable response to the reasonable request and proposal for providing an adhoc payment to the workers in view of the huge profits being made by the employers".
"So the meeting decided to wait till December 31 and if the demand is not met, we will serve the strike notice on January three. All cement units across the country will strike work on January 24," N Nanjappan, General Secretary of Indian National Cement Workers’ Federation, said.
The resolution also alleged that the manufacturers were "flouting" all laws and discriminating contract labourers by denying them benefits enjoyed by permanent workers.
It also urged the government chalk out strategy to rejuvenate sick cement PSUs.
About 115 leaders representing 56 unions from 12 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Tamil Nadu attended the convention, said H Mahadevan, All India Cement Workers Federation (AITUC).
The unions had observed November 16 as "All India Protest Day" against manufacturers’ "reluctance" in announcing the adhoc payment to employees in view of the huge profits being made by them.
