Malaysia - cement, steel shortages
04 October 2007

The Building Material Distributors Association of Malaysia (BMDAM) is
appealing to the Government to intervene and overcome the acute shortage of
cement and steel bar supply in the country. Its President, Steven Tai said
the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs should intervene to
resolve the shortages immediately.

Meanwhile, due to a shortage of cement supply, BMDAM representatives had
attended two meetings with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer
Affairs on Sept 6 and 13 pertaining to cement supply. Tai said BMDAM
representatives had highlighted that the primary cause of the interruption
in cement supply was due to the quota imposed by major manufacturers.

Unless the situation is addressed expeditiously, the building and
construction industry will be affected severely," he added.
