10 September 2007

The Azerbaijan Government and   Lafarge cannot reach agreement on the location to construct a new cement plant, Economic Development Minister of Azerbaijan Heydar Babayev said.

"We have been in negotiations to define the location. We are planning to build a second plant outside Baky, but the French company insists on constructing the plant in Garadag District "

In parallel, study of perspective areas in Garadag is continuing to ensure production over the next 10-15 years envisaged by  Lafarge, he added.

On Jan 9 this year, Azerbaijan reached agreement with the world’s giant cement producer  Lafarge on establishment of a cement plant in the republic.  Lafarge is likely to build a second cement plant with a capacity of 1Mta. The project value is estimated at around EUR100-150m. The plant will be equipped with the latest technologies.
