Cement prices to remain steady at current level, India
22 June 2007

Cement prices, which generally declines in the monsoon season, are unlikely to drop this year due to high demand, an industry official said.

"I do not expect cement prices to go down in the monsoon season due to high demand. The prices should remain steady at the current level," Cement Stockist and Dealers Association of Mumbai President Sanjay Ladiwala said.

The cement prices are currently ruling at Rs 235 per bag in Mumbai’s wholesale market and Rs 250-255 per bag in retail.

In Hyderabad, however, cement prices have increased by Rs 2-3 per bag, while in Chennai they have risen by Rs 3-5 per bag, traders said.

In Chennai, the wholesale rate is Rs 225 per bag of 50 kg, while retail price is Rs 240 per bag.

The arrivals of cement in the markets would come down in July-September period when the factories shut down for annual maintenance but the prices would not come down as the demand is also expected to decline in same range, they added.
