19 June 2007

Peruvian domestic cement sales stood at 2.23Mt in the period January to May 2007, up 12.9 per cent YoY, the country’s Association of Cement Companies (Asocem) said.

Peru’s cement exports dropped 74.1 per cent YoY to about 90,000t. Thus, total cement sales registered a 0.3 per cent increase to 2.32Mt.

Cement production edged up 1.24 pct to 2.34Mt over the period.

The public works initiated in the municipalities of Lima and in the country’s interior boosted cement demand on the Peruvian market in May 2007, the economic analyst from the local consultancy Maximixe, Angel Diaz, said. The residential projects financed by the Government of Peru also contributed to the cement demand boost over the period, Diaz added.

For next months Peruvian cement companies have allocated investments in capacity increase, in order to be able to continue supplying the local market and to go on exporting, Diaz said.
