St. Lawrence Cement Group Granted Leave To Appeal By The Supreme Court Of Canada

The Supreme Court of Canada has granted  St. Lawrence Cement Group Inc. (ST.A.T) leave to appeal an October 2006 ruling in class action case involving the company’s Beauport, Que. cement plant.  
 
St. Lawrence said it’s "pleased that the Supreme Court of Canada has accepted to examine the important issues of environmental law and class actions raised by the Beauport case which are of concern to the company and to the industry as a whole."  
 
As reported, according to the October 2006 judgment, rendered by the Quebec Court of Appeal, St. Lawrence is liable for damages in the context of a class action brought by the residents of Beauport in relation to the plant’s operations from 1991 to 1997.  
 
The company noted that has recorded a pretax provision of C$13.8m as a result of this judgment.  
 
St. Lawrence produces and supplies products and services for the construction industry.
