Gauteng running out of building materials

Gauteng running out of building materials
03 May 2007

The Gauteng Department of Housing South Africa, has expressed concern that contractors building low-cost housing are going to run out of cement and building materials in coming months. The department is now considering setting up building warehouses to address possible shortages of material due to high demand linked to the building of stadiums for the 2010 World Cup and the Gautrain. The warehouses will be used to stockpile building materials.

Housing MEC Nomvula Moko-nyane said demand for building materials was growing rapidly in the building industry. As a result, small and medium developers contracted to deliver higher volumes of low-cost housing were concerned that the country might soon run out of building stock, including cement.
