Argentina construction activity Up 6.5 per cent YoY Feb 2007

The construction activity of Argentina expanded 6.5 pct year-on-year and 2.4 pct month-on-month in February 2007, the national statistic institute INDEC said on March 28, 2007.


The construction sector activity expanded 7.1 pct year-on-year in the first two months of 2007, INDEC said.


The total area allotted for construction increased by 21.8 per cent YoY in February 2007, and in the first two months of 2007 registered a 19.7 per cent rise from the same period of 2006.


Since the severe economic crisis in Argentina in 2002, construction activity has been registering high growth figures and expanded 15.5 per cent in 2006.


The sales of Portland cement increased by 13.5 per cent in February 2007, brick sales rose 11.9 per centt, asphalt sales went up 10.8 pct, while paint sales fell 15.4 per cent and sales of ceramic tiling fell 2.5 per cent. Brick sales rose 24.6 pct year-on-year over January to February 2007, Portland cement sales increased 12.8 per cent YoY and asphalt sales rose 10.4 per cent.


The construction sector is one of the most powerful engines of the Argentine economy and one of the largest job generators.
