09 March 2007

Romanian Carpatcement Holding, a unit of German building materials and cement maker  HeidelbergCement, reported a 39 per cent YoY increase in turnover to 980m Romanian lei ($381.26m) for 2006, the company said on March 9, 2007.

Its cement producing division  Carpatcement said its turnover alone jumped 40 pct on the year to 781m lei ($303.84 m) last year.

The company also comprises a concrete division Carpat Beton and Carpat Agregate, producing aggregates.

Carpatcement Holding sees its turnover going up by eight to 10 per cent in 2007.

Carpatcement’s cement sales saw a year-on-year increase of 40 per cent during the summer months of 2006, while in December 2006 its sales rose fivefold year-on-year due to the high temperatures registered in the country, Carpatcement Holding’s president Mihai Rohan said.

The company invested some EUR25m ($32.83m) in 2006 to upgrade its cement plant in Fieni and to finance environment protection projects at its three plants in the country.

Carpatcement has invested a total of 20 mln euro ($26.26m) in environment protection projects since 1998.

The Romanian cement market rose 20 pct year-on-year in the first half of 2006, double compared to earlier forecast, driven by the high number of residential construction projects carried out in Bucharest and other large cities in the country.

The market is seen to grow by between 12 per cent and 15 pct over the next five years.
