Holcim/Schwenk joint venture in slag
27 November 2006

Holcim and Schwenk Zement have commissioned slag joint venture at the Salzgitter steelworks, Hüttensand Salzgitter, which represents an investment of around EUR25m. The plant has a capacity of 450,000tpa of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and will receive its raw material prom the ’A’ blast furnace at Salzgitter.

Holcim has been absorbing the slag from the ’B’ blast furnace since 1998, an arrangement that will continue.  The ground granulated slag will be taken to the cement works by inland waterway, in the case of Holcim to the cement works at Höver near Hanover or on to Holcim’s new €10m export terminal at Brunsbüttel, seaward of Hamburg, that supplies Britain and Ireland with cementitious materials.
