27 September 2006

Lafarge, has won the bid for setting up a major cement plant at Al Sindi in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, according to top government officials. In a decision taken by the state cabinet, the  proposed cement plant, with an annual capacity of 2Mt, in the Mandi district has been assigned to Lafarge.

It has been third time lucky in the state as it lost out to domestic firms in two other projects awarded in the state in the last couple of years .Officials  said Lafarge faced stiff competition for the bid but finally managed to bag the Al Sindi project. In another significant decision, the Himachal Pradesh government has awarded the Broh Shind cement plant in Chamba district, some 450km, to Jaypeee Associates, a major domestic player.

This plant also had an annual capacity 2Mta of cement, officials said. There were a dozen companies in the race for this plant including Lafarge and the German multinational Heidelberg, considered the second largest cement company in the world with some 63 manufacturing units. The Broh Shind plant had been allotted to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) but the deal was cancelled due to the long delays by L&T and fresh bids were invited again by the government.

Jaypee is already setting up another cement plant at Bagha in Solan district of the state.
