Madras cements to set up wind mills, thermal power plant

Madras Cements Ltd (MCL) has commissioned a 38MW (MW) capacity captive thermal power plant at its Alathiyur unit in Tamil Nadu. It is investing Rs110 crore in expanding captive power generation capacity to 100 percent of requirements at its other units. It is adding windmills to increase captive power generation by 12 megawatts for its RR Nagar unit in Tamil Nadu. It is setting up a seven-MW capacity thermal plant at its Jayantipuram unit in Andhra Pradesh. The Company is getting seven megawatts of power from AP Gas Power Corporation (APGPC) to meet 50 percent of the power requirement of the unit. It has invested Rs23 crore in APGPC. MCL expects to increase cement production from 3.6Mt in 2004-2005 to 4.5Mt in 2005-2006.
