Cement safeguards in Philippines
17 August 2005

Trade Sec. Peter B. Favila will meet with local cement manufacturers this week to discuss their concerns over a recent Supreme Court (SC) decision disallowing the government from imposing a safeguard duty on cement imports. He said the Cement Manufacturers’ Association of the Philippines had requested the meeting. Concerns over the viability of the local cement industry have been raised and the Fair Trade Alliance has warned that the SC decision could be a "death knell" for both the manufacturing and farm sectors.
