Cement demand in the Catalonia region, northeastern Spain, stood at 1.547Mt in the first half of 2005, a 1.72 per cent year-on-year decrease, the local cement makers’ association Ciment Catala said on July 24, 2005. Cement demand in the Barcelona province dropped 2.75 per cent, demand in the Lleida province decreased by 8.86 per cent, demand in the Girona province went down 5.8 per cent, while demand in the Tarragona province rose 11.5 per cent.

Demand dropped most in March 2005, 7.15 per cent year-on-year, and in January 2005, 3.28 per cent year-on-year, and increased most in February 2005, 6.4 per cent year-on-year. The production of cement in the Catalonia region decreased 0.25 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2005.
