Police seize 150 bags of fake cement, Uganda
07 December 2004

Police are investigating Tororo Cement Ltd. for alleged manufacture and supply of fake cement.

Police are also investigating claims that fake cement on the market is partly responsible for the recent collapse of several buildings under construction in and around Kampala.

Some 150 bags of Portland cement produced by Tororo Cement Factory have been impounded and are lying at Wandegeya Police Station. The Criminal Investigations Directorate confiscated the cement on October 30.

The cement was seized from a construction site on Kyaddondo Road in Nakasero, Kampala. Wandegeya OC CID Rashid Oboo confirmed that the station is holding the cement.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards first cleared the cement in a November 9 report but then the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers insisted on another report.  The bureau issued the second report on November 19 acknowledging that the cement was indeed substandard.
