Local cement crisis worsens

Local cement crisis worsens
24 September 2004

According to Teshreen newspaper, OMRAN Cement Company, a state-owned company affiliated to the Ministry of Economy and in charge of the import and export of building materials, supplies 15,000 tons of black cement to the local markets on daily basis, which is the enterprise’s full actual production capacity. Nevertheless, the local cement consumption exceeds 24,000 tons per day. Thus, there is a big gap between the actual production and consumption estimated at 9,000 tons per day. Though Omran Company had contracted foreign companies to import 600,000 tons of cement to bridge the consumption gap more than 6 months ago, non of these cement amounts have arrived into Syria until now.
