Organised protest against Mary Nour
12 August 2004

About 60 workers representing the Mexican cement workers union have staged a dockside protest against the discharge of some 27,000t of Russian cement from the Mary Nour. Spokesmen for the group claim that this imported cement will mean a loss of jobs and wages.

Local TV reporters claim that over the weekend officials from Altamira’s mayors office, and the General director of the port of Altamira met with officials from Cemex and the Mexican Cement Association to discuss this matter and to try to halt the discharge (as reported in The Reformation).

However the mayor indicated that he cannot prevent the ships discharge but only make sure that order and procedures are upheld. Meanwhile, port officials remain confident that the ship will unload soon in Altamira or return to Tampico for unloading.
