Holcim Romania, a unit of Swiss cement company Holcim Ltd, said it plans to invest EUR40m (US$49.4m) by 2006 to protect environment.

Holcim Romania will invest the money in environmental protection projects, alternative fuels and raw materials, further modernisation of cement production, ecological concrete stations, boosting occupational health and safety, in social projects and human resources, the company said in a statement.

"In 2004 we plan to invest over EUR20m, mainly in further modernisation works in the cement plants, launching new ecological concrete stations and modernising the traditional ones," Holcim Romania’s CEO Kurt Habersatter said in the statement.

Holcim’s objectives in environment protection include reduction of atmospheric emissions and utilisation of industrial waste in order to protect natural resources, Habersatter added.

Holcim Romania is committed to promoting, sustaining and applying a healthy environmental policy, the company said.

Between 1998 and 2003 Holcim Romania invested over EUR15m in environmental protection.

Holcim is the first cement, concrete and aggregates producer to develop the concept of "Environmentally Friendly Concrete Plant" for Romania. The state-of-the-art production technology meets the latest environmental standards, reduces dust and noise emissions and allows recycling of fresh concrete.
