New Fijian cement plant officially launched
12 August 2014

Tengy Cement (Fiji) Company Ltd (TCFL), a Chinese investment company, has officially launched operations on the island of Fiji.

Construction of the plant, situated in the outskirts of Lami, Suva, started in 2012 and was completed last year. Cement production began in February 2014 with 20,000tpa produced to date. There are also plans by the company to trade beyond Fiji.

The Tengy Cement plant now becomes Fiji’s second cement producing plant. Pacific Cement (formerly Fiji Industries) operates a 0.215Mta grinding works, also in Lami.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, said: “We all know that the construction boom in Fiji has led to the increase in the demand for cement and other building materials. Unfortunately the local industry hasn’t always been able to keep pace with this demand and at times we had to turn to expensive imports. We expect this inconsistency to be a thing of the past.”
