Health, Safety & Environmental Management in Cement Manufacturing Course
Suitable to all in the cement industry looking to enhance their skills on key
issues surrounding health, safety and environmental management in cement
manufacturing.
This course also compliments the Cement Manufacturing Technology Course and is
run alongside for students wishing to gain a broader induction to the cement
industry.
Course Content

Module 1 explores why health, safety and environmental management is
important in the cement manufacturing industry, and why the topics are often
grouped together. The legislative framework covering occupational health, safety
and environmental impact in industry generally. Also the management systems that
are applied to control and mitigate against threats to health, safety and the
environment.

Module 2 provides an in-depth assessment of health and safety management
focusing on the cement manufacturing industry. The particular health and safety
issues faced by the cement industry, hazard identification, risk assessment,
risk management and risk communication. Specific considerations relating to
mines and quarries, crushers, mills, kilns and cement packing plants, including
the design of a cement factory to minimise risks to health and safety. Finally
health and safety performance monitoring, development and management planning.

Module 3 provides an in-depth assessment of the specific environmental
issues faced by the cement manufacturing industry, including considerations
relating to emissions to air, water and ground, visual impact and noise
emissions. Also the design of a cement factory to manage, control and mitigate
these environmental impacts, and finally environmental performance monitoring,
development and management planning.

Module 4 provides a conclusion to the course, looking at organisation for
health, safety and environmental management in the cement industry, continuous
performance improvement and a discussion of the likely progression of these
topics for the cement industry in the future.
Course Material
The course is open to all in the cement industry and a small fee will be charged
for each student.
The course is conducted on-line, allowing students flexibility (within a six-week
period) to complete each module and associated assessments at work or home.
Students should expect to devote around 5+ hours per week/per module plus some
additional time for private reading/study. A computer with internet access
(broadband recommended) and email capabilities will be necessary.
Throughout the course the lectures are supplemented with exercises allowing
students to relate the course material to their cement factories, or the cement
factories of their clients in the case of equipment or service suppliers to the
cement industry. Certification is achieved by completing a satisfactory level
of exercises, and by end-of -module exams.
The course is complete with downloadable transcripts of the lectures, exercises,
and reading material for the training record.
