Cemento Progreso acquires Cemento Interoceánico

Guatemala-based Cemento Progreso has bought a 100 per cent stake in Panamanian cement producer Cemento Interoceánico, according to Panamá América. In an internal communication to its staff, Cemento Interoceánico informed its personnel that labour conditions would remain the same and there would be no change of leadership.

New 120,000tpa cement plant for El Salvador

Guatemala’s Monterrey group has laid the first stone for a new 120,000tpa cement plant on the Acajutla-Sonsonate road in Acajutla, El Salvador. Construction will be carried out by Qualicons, a Guatemalan capital construction company. The facility is located near an industrial dock, which will enable raw material imports from Asia. The new works represents an investment of US$12m and is expected to provided 600 people with employment. Commissioning of the plant is expected in December 2019.

Cementos Progreso tests new San Gabriel plant

Guatamala-based Cementos Progreso has completed its investment of GTQ3.85bn (US$501m) at its San Gabriel plant in San Juan Sacatepequez. Tests were launched in 2018 and are expected to continue in the next few months before the 4500tpd plant enters commercial operation. Initially output will be sold in the domestic market, but in the longer term, Cementos Progreso expects to export some of the production volume.

China accounts for 15% of Central American cement imports

In the first half of 2018, Central America’s largest importing country was Nicaragua, which purchased cement from overseas sources to the value of US$28m, followed by Guatemala at US$18m. Cementos Progreso uses novel raw material transport technology

Cementos Progreso is using RopeCon material transport technology to connect the crusher with its San Gabriel cement works. Located some 35km west of Guatemala City, the 2.2Mta plant is supplied by limestone from a quarry around 200m lower than the cement plant. Cemex Latin American Holdings saw turnover decline by 5.5 per cent to US$1315.3m and EBITDA fell by 26.7 per cent to US$310.8m, with the margin coming down from 32.2 to 25 per cent. The total value of traded hydraulic cements in Central American countries fell 14 per cent from US$56m to US$48m in the first nine months of 2016, according to CentralAmericaData. Cemex Latam Holdings has inaugurated its expanded Arizona cement works in Guatemala.
