Lucky turns to the sun
Lucky Cement is looking forward to a new solar PV plant with energy storage to improve the efficiency and sustainability of energy generation at its Pezu plant in Pakistan. The combined energy assets will not only deliver a reliable and efficient power system but also significantly lower the cement producer’s CO2 emissions.

Lucky Cement currently uses a mix of heavy fuel-oil, natural gas and grid-based power for the 70-90MW baseload demand at its cement plant in Pezu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Between 16-20 per cent of the producer’s power needs are met by waste heat recovery (WHR). However, while WHR is a relatively cheap solution, it introduces intermittency into the system, leading to an inefficient power supply. Therefore, while focussed on improving its renewable energy supply, the company wanted to maximise solar PV-based generation without losing a reliable and efficient power system.
